summarizing activity

Ask your child the following after a story:
Someone...
Wanted...
But...
So...
In
The
End...

And in addition to summarizing, it makes a great tool for discussing story conflicts, or for creating skeletons for original narratives.

Military package

I apolgize for the delay. Here is a messsage from one of the parents in our class who would like to help out some of our military. The students will be making cards, and possibly writing some nice letters in class.

Hi,
I know ASE is collecting foods for this month for the needy.  In addition, our family was wondering if you thought it would be nice of the 2nd graders to send a little care package to the military. Our family has a family friend that enlisted this summer in the Air Force, Special Forces, Paratrooper-so, I would be willing to mail the items, etc to him and the other members of his troop- in honor of Veteran's Day and "generosity".  I was reflecting on how much even a piece of gum can really lift your spirits on a challenging day. I would like to send gum (stick together) and candy bars (the military is so generous with courage), or anything else that others would deem helpful. If you would like to forward this email, or parts of it, to other families, that would be appreciated. I would like to send the package out by next Friday, so arrives by Thanksgiving.
Thanks,
Maria White

If you would like to send stuff in with your child, I will make sure that it gets to Mrs. White. Please send items in no later than Monday November 29th. This will help Mrs. White put together a package for the December holidays. The post office has some very specific mailing times.

quizlet-vocabulary

This is a website with our vocabulary for reading and other subjects.
This week we are reading Two Mice.
Our science is Plants Grow and Change.

There are many things you can do with these vocabulary words, different activities. The space race might be a bit difficult for our students.

Here is the link:
http://quizlet.com/_hodu2    (Two Mice)

http://quizlet.com/_h31cx     (Plants Grow and Change)

Feedback would be great! I am just learning how to use this tool. The kids and I use it in class, it would be great if it helps you at home.

science quiz

We will be taking a science quiz on Thursday. It is going to be on living and non living things. Stay tuned for some vocabulary words to study. The students will also get a copy of the words in class.

math test update

Yes, we will take our measurement test this week. I have moved the test date to Wednesday. We will do some review on Tuesday morning. Don't forget, this is a half day!

The students will get a review sheet for homework on Tuesday.

Just in case you want to practice ahead of time. Students will need to measure items in centimeters, with a ruler. They will also be expected to estimate certain items.
The most difficult part will be comparing one item to another. Please remind them that they will need to subtract if they are trying to determine how much longer one item is than another.

It is likely that we will spread out our test over 2 days, Wednesday and Thursday to help the students take their time, and do their best.
